Let’s look at the beginning in Genesis. Adam and Eve are in the most perfect place—the garden that God had created for them. Everything they could have ever wanted was there.
Y’all—no sin, no shame, no guilt, no struggle. Yet deception enters.
Genesis 3:4–5 says:“The serpent said to the woman, ‘You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”
Why did Eve eat the fruit first? In my opinion, I think Satan approached her first because he knew that she was a threat to him.
Remember, Satan was probably the closest relationally to God, so we can assume he knew His heart, perhaps better than anyone else. Anticipating God’s plan and seeing the gap that existed when Adam was alone, he had to act—and quickly.
Maybe he heard God speaking to Adam and realized, “This is a dangerous weapon—one that must be dealt with immediately.” So he did—with a sweet fruit, something that looked innocent and unassuming. He used that fruit to trick Eve into believing a lie. He redirected the truth in a way that caused Eve to question God’s original instructions.
Genesis 2:18 says: “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
In the NKJV, the term “helper suitable for him” is translated as “help meet.” Our culture today often uses the term “helpmate,” but the Americanized version is a sadly limited definition that misses the depth and intent of the original meaning.
R. David Freedman, Director of Religious Studies at the University of California at Davis, helps unpack the original meaning in his work, Woman: A Power Equal to Man.
In Hebrew, the term “help meet/help mate” comes from two words: Ezer and Kenegdo.
Ezer has two meanings: “to rescue, to save,” and “to be strong.”This is the same Hebrew word God uses to describe Himself toward humans in eight other verses. It’s also a military term used to describe aid in battle.
For example, Deuteronomy 33:29 (NIV) says: “Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.”
The second word, Kenegdo, is formed from three Hebrew root concepts, but in its purest form, it means “one who stands in front of or opposite to.”
So when we read the Scriptures, we see that God designed woman—the companion to man—as his equal. She was given the unique strength to rescue, confront, encourage, challenge, hold accountable, and walk beside Adam as a true partner.
We were designed to be warriors. God created women to save, rescue, and stand on the front lines, facing challenges head-on in love and truth.
If Eve can be led astray in a perfect world, we are at risk every day in an imperfect one.
I need you to hear this: there is a real enemy and a real war against you—but I don’t want that to intimidate you. You were designed for war from the very beginning. So be encouraged: you don’t need anything more than what you have right now. God has already given you what you need to overcome, to fight, and to rise victoriously.
We have to choose to be obedient, to trust His direction explicitly, and to confidently proclaim that God has the final word—the battle has already been won.
